I’ve got to admit, most of the French onion dip I’ve consumed in my life has been made from spice packets and sour cream. While those instant French onion dip mixes are good, there is NOTHING like homemade French onion dip. Trust me.
This thick and creamy caramelized French onion dip recipe is perfect with potato chips. There just might not be two flavors more perfectly suited together than French onion dip and salty rippled potato chips.
Am I right?
Caramelizing the onions is the why this dip is so good, and our secret ingredient for making the onions taste amazing is honey. Yep, a little bit of honey adds a sweet onion taste that really makes this cold dip stand out above the rest.
Easy French Onion Dip
Yields: 4-6 appetizer size servings
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup cream cheese
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon honey (or to taste)
- 1 tablespoon chopped chives, plus more for garnish
Directions
In a hot skillet, melt the butter and olive oil together.
Add the onions and a pinch of salt, if desired. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and a soft, golden brown color. This will take about 20-30 minutes.
Towards the end of cooking, turn off the heat and add the honey. Stir it into the onions until well combined.
(We reserved a few of the sautéed onions to top the dip when serving. You do not need to do this, but now is a good time to set a few aside if you want to.)
In a large bowl, combine the sour cream, cream cheese, caramelized onions (including any drippings left in the skillet), and a tablespoon of the chopped chives. Mix together until well incorporated.
While this dip can be served immediately after preparing, it is best if refrigerated for at least an hour. The flavors will mingle and become more robust after sitting for a while.
Garnish with the additional chopped chives before serving.
To Store: Place in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The ingredients may start to separate, so just stir them together before serving.
