Foil Packet Nachos are one of our favorite Hobo Packets for camping meals! These easy campfire meals can be assembled in foil and eaten right out of the packet. No mess, no clean up!
This easy recipe for campfire nachos is the camping version of taco night. Add whatever toppings you love on top of the nachos after they have heated.
While we used beef, you could easily use chicken or another type of protein. Just make sure that the meat is cooked prior to adding to the foil packets as it won’t cook through enough while warming up over the grill, campfire or in the oven.
We have made foil pockets in our low-wattage toaster oven in the RV. We love these ovens because they use less power, take up less space, but still let you cook a hot meal.
We are also big fans of our portable oven, which would also be great to heat up these packets on travel days. See our YouTube video comparing portable ovens.
Easy Foil Packet Nachos Recipe
This recipe can be made on the grill or in the oven. To heat over a campfire, place the foil packets on a grill grate over hot coals.
Yield: 6 servings
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 bag tortilla chips (we used restaurant-style chips but any type of tortilla chips can be used)
- 2 cups cooked taco meat (or plain ground beef, if desired)
- 1 ½ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 ½ cup shredded Monterey Jack
Toppings For Serving
- Chopped cilantro
- Diced tomatoes
- Diced onion
- Sliced jalapenos
- Avocado
- Sour cream
Directions:
Step 1
Cut aluminum foil into large squares (or use pre-cut aluminum foil sheets).
Step 2
In the middle of each square, place a mound of tortilla chips.
Top the chips with cheese and beef.
Fold the aluminum foil over the chip and beef creating a pocket. Roll up any open edges to seal the pocket.
Step 3
FOR GRILLING: Prepare the grill for medium heat (about 350 degrees.) Place the foil packets on the grill and cook for about 10 minutes or until the ingredients have warmed through and the cheese has melted.
FOR THE OVEN: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the foil packets on a large rimmed baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes or until the ingredients are heated through and the cheese is melted.
Step 4
To serve, place the packet on a plate. VERY carefully open the foil packets. Steam will escape from the packets and could burn you, so be careful!
Top the nachos with additional toppings as desired.
